The Church of the Gesù (Chiesa del Gesù) is the principal church of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), located near Piazza Venezia. Built between 1568 and 1584, it set the standard for Baroque church architecture with its grand nave, side chapels, and lavish decoration. The highlight is the breathtaking ceiling fresco, 'The Triumph of the Name of Jesus' by Giovanni Battista Gaulli (Il Baciccio), which uses illusionistic techniques to create a dramatic opening to heaven. The interior is adorned with marble, gold, and intricate stucco work. The chapel of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the Jesuit founder, contains his tomb and a striking silver statue. The church remains an active place of worship and a popular tourist destination. Its location on a busy street means it can be crowded, but the artistry inside is worth the visit.
