The Capitoline Museums, perched atop Capitoline Hill, are a treasure trove of classical art and artifacts. Founded in 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated a collection of bronze statues to the people of Rome, it is considered the world's first public museum. The museum complex consists of two main buildings, the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, connected by an underground tunnel. Highlights include the majestic equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the original bronze Capitoline Wolf, and the Dying Gaul. The galleries also feature Renaissance paintings, ancient Roman inscriptions, and stunning views of the Roman Forum from the Tabularium. The Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo, serves as the museum's grand entrance. A visit here offers a journey through Rome's artistic and political history, from its legendary foundation to the Renaissance.
