Riomaggiore is the first village you encounter when arriving from La Spezia, and it sets the tone for the entire Cinque Terre experience. Its pastel-colored houses are stacked vertically on a rocky spur, creating a postcard-perfect scene from the harbor. The main street, Via Colombo, runs parallel to the sea and is lined with trattorias, gelaterias, and souvenir shops. A short tunnel leads to the marina, where small boats bob in the water and locals gather for an evening passeggiata. The village is also the starting point for the famous Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane) trail to Manarola, currently closed for restoration. Riomaggiore has a more laid-back vibe than its neighbors, with fewer crowds in the upper alleys. The castle ruins at the top offer panoramic views, and the nearby beach at Fossola is a favorite for swimming. Wine lovers can visit the local cooperative to sample Sciacchetrà, a sweet dessert wine. Despite its popularity, Riomaggiore retains a genuine fishing-village atmosphere, especially in the early morning when fishermen mend their nets.
