San Giovanni Evangelista is one of Ravenna's oldest churches, founded in the 5th century by Empress Galla Placidia. The church is renowned for its remarkable 13th-century mosaic floor, which vividly illustrates scenes from the Fourth Crusade, including the conquest of Constantinople. This unique artwork covers much of the nave and provides a rare narrative of medieval history. The church's exterior is simple brick, typical of Ravenna's early Christian architecture, while the interior features a wooden ceiling and fragments of ancient frescoes. Visitors can walk over the glass-protected mosaics, which are best viewed from the raised walkway. The church also houses a small museum with artifacts from its long history.
