The Arian Baptistery in Ravenna is a 5th-century religious structure built by the Ostrogoths under King Theodoric the Great. It is one of the few surviving Arian monuments in the city. The baptistery's dome features a striking mosaic of the baptism of Christ, where John the Baptist is depicted in a unique way, wearing a tunic and holding a staff, unlike the traditional depiction. The mosaic also includes the twelve apostles, but with a different arrangement than in the Orthodox Baptistery. The building is small and octagonal, and its interior is relatively simple compared to the Orthodox Baptistery, but the mosaic is a highlight. The baptistery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and offers insight into the Arian Christian tradition, which was considered heretical by the Catholic Church. Visitors can appreciate the historical and artistic significance of this lesser-known gem.
