The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built around 425 AD, is a small cruciform building that houses some of the earliest and most exquisite mosaics in Ravenna. Despite its modest size, the interior is a jewel box of deep blue, green, and gold tesserae covering the vaults and lunettes. The mosaics depict Christian symbols such as the Good Shepherd, the Lamb of God, and the four Evangelists, all set against a starry sky. The famous mosaic of the Good Shepherd, with Christ seated among sheep, is particularly moving for its pastoral serenity. The mausoleum's intimate scale allows visitors to feel immersed in the art, and the dim lighting enhances the mystical atmosphere. It is considered a masterpiece of early Christian art and a precursor to the Byzantine style seen in San Vitale.
