Just outside Ravenna, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe stands as a monumental testament to early Christian architecture and art. Built in the 6th century, this basilica is dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, Ravenna's first bishop. The exterior is simple brick, but the interior is breathtaking. The centerpiece is the apse mosaic, a radiant vision of the Transfiguration of Christ. In the center, a large cross studded with jewels floats against a starry sky, with the face of Christ at the crossing. Above, the hand of God emerges from clouds. Below, Saint Apollinaris stands with arms raised in prayer, surrounded by twelve white sheep representing the apostles. The mosaic's gold background and vivid greens and blues create a heavenly glow. The nave is lined with 24 marble columns, and the side aisles contain a collection of early Christian sarcophagi, intricately carved with biblical scenes. The church's serene atmosphere and historical depth make it a must-visit for art and history lovers.
