The Basilica of San Vitale, consecrated in 547 AD, is one of the most important surviving examples of Byzantine architecture and mosaic art in the world. Its octagonal plan, influenced by Byzantine designs, creates a luminous interior where light plays across the golden mosaics. The presbytery and apse are adorned with spectacular mosaics depicting Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora with their retinues, alongside biblical scenes such as the Sacrifice of Isaac and the Hospitality of Abraham. These mosaics are not only artistic masterpieces but also political statements, asserting the authority of the Byzantine Empire in Ravenna. Visitors are often awestruck by the shimmering tesserae that seem to glow, especially when sunlight streams through the alabaster windows. The basilica also features intricate marble inlays and a soaring dome, making it a must-see for art and history enthusiasts.
