Petroio is a charming hilltop village in the Crete Senesi, famous for its centuries-old tradition of terracotta craftsmanship. The village is dotted with workshops where artisans create pottery, tiles, and decorative items using local clay. Its medieval core features a 12th-century Romanesque church, the Pieve di San Sigismondo, with a striking bell tower. Narrow alleys wind past stone houses, and the main square offers views of the surrounding clay hills. Petroio is less touristy than nearby Pienza, providing an authentic glimpse into Tuscan rural life. Visitors can watch potters at work, purchase unique souvenirs, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The village also hosts a small museum dedicated to terracotta.
