The Asinaro River meanders through the countryside south of Noto, offering a serene landscape of reeds, willows, and clear waters. This river is not only a place of natural beauty but also a site of historical significance: it was here in 413 BC that the Athenian army, defeated at Syracuse, was annihilated while trying to cross the river. Today, the area is a quiet spot for walking, birdwatching, and picnicking. The riverbanks are lush with vegetation, and in spring wildflowers bloom. The water is shallow and clean, inviting a refreshing wade on a hot day. The surrounding fields are dotted with ancient olive trees and dry-stone walls. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a contemplative escape from the baroque streets of Noto. The site is uncommercialized, with no facilities, so visitors come prepared for a rustic experience.
