Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost and largest of the five Cinque Terre villages, known for its wide sandy beach (the only one in Cinque Terre) and a charming historic center. The village is divided into two parts: the newer Fegina area with the beach and train station, and the old town (Centro Storico) with narrow alleys, pastel houses, and the 13th-century Church of San Giovanni Battista. A pedestrian tunnel connects the two. Monterosso offers more restaurants, shops, and accommodations than its neighbors, making it a popular base. The beach is lined with colorful umbrellas and lidos, but there are also free public sections. Above the town, the Capuchin monastery and the statue of Neptune (Il Gigante) are notable landmarks. The village is also the starting point for the Sentiero Azzurro hike to Vernazza.
