Cinque Terre National Park (Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre) was established in 1999 to protect the unique cultural landscape of the five villages and their surrounding terraced hillsides. The park covers over 3,800 hectares of rugged coastline, vineyards, olive groves, and Mediterranean scrub. Its network of hiking trails, including the famous Sentiero Azzurro, offers hikers breathtaking vistas of the sea and villages. The park is also a haven for biodiversity, with rare plant species and birdlife. Visitors can explore ancient dry-stone walls, watchtowers, and sanctuaries that dot the landscape. The park's visitor centers in each village provide maps and information. A highlight is the Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane) between Riomaggiore and Manarola, though it's often closed for maintenance. The park promotes sustainable tourism, encouraging visitors to use trains and ferries to reduce environmental impact.
