Piazza Pretoria is the main square of Monreale, dominated by the grand Fontana Pretoria, a Renaissance fountain originally designed for a Florentine palace and later relocated here. The fountain features a circular basin with mythological figures, nymphs, and sea creatures, all carved from white marble. Visitors can admire the intricate details of the sculptures while enjoying the lively atmosphere of the square, which is also home to the town hall and several cafes. The contrast between the fountain's ornate design and the simpler surrounding architecture makes it a memorable stop.
Don't miss
- The central fountain with its tiered basins and mythological statues
- The surrounding Baroque buildings and town hall
- People-watching at the outdoor cafes
- Evening illuminations that highlight the fountain's details
