Palazzo del Te is a suburban villa built for Federico II Gonzaga, designed by Giulio Romano, a pupil of Raphael. It is a pinnacle of Mannerist architecture, where classical rules are playfully subverted. The villa is famous for its frescoes, especially the Sala dei Giganti (Room of the Giants), where a dramatic scene of the fall of the Titans covers all walls and ceiling, creating an immersive, disorienting experience. Other rooms include the Sala di Psiche, depicting the myth of Cupid and Psyche in erotic detail, and the Sala dei Cavalli, with life-sized horses. The building itself is a single-story structure around a courtyard, with loggias and a garden. What makes it distinctive is the seamless integration of architecture and painting, blurring reality and illusion. A visit feels like stepping into a fantastical world.
