Castello di San Giorgio is a formidable medieval fortress that forms part of the larger Ducal Palace complex in Mantua. Built in the late 14th century by Francesco I Gonzaga, the castle features a moat, drawbridges, and massive towers that evoke its defensive purpose. Today, it is best known for the Camera degli Sposi (Bridal Chamber), a small room on the first floor adorned with Andrea Mantegna's breathtaking frescoes completed in 1474. The frescoes depict the Gonzaga family and court scenes, with the famous 'Oculus' on the ceiling creating an illusion of an open sky. Visitors can explore the castle's courtyards, towers, and the adjacent Ducal Palace, which together form one of Italy's most impressive Renaissance residences. The castle's strategic location near the Mincio River adds to its picturesque appeal, and the views from its ramparts offer a glimpse into Mantua's medieval past.
