The Basilica of San Frediano is one of Lucca's oldest and most revered churches, dating back to the 6th century. Its most striking feature is the magnificent golden mosaic on the upper facade, depicting Christ ascending to heaven with angels and apostles below, a rare example of medieval mosaic art in Tuscany. Inside, the spacious nave with its wooden ceiling and simple columns creates a serene atmosphere. The highlight is the tomb of Saint Frediano, an Irish bishop who became Lucca's patron saint, located in the left transept. Visitors can also admire the 12th-century baptismal font and several Renaissance paintings. The church's peaceful setting in a quiet square adds to its charm, offering a contrast to the busier tourist sites.
