Riomaggiore is the first of the five Cinque Terre villages when arriving from La Spezia, and it's famous for its steep, narrow streets lined with pastel-colored houses that cascade down to a tiny harbor. The village is built around a stream that now runs under the main street, Via Colombo. The marina, with its pebble beach and fishing boats, offers a classic Mediterranean scene. Riomaggiore is the starting point of the famous Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane), a scenic cliffside path to Manarola. The village also has a 14th-century castle (Castello di Riomaggiore) with panoramic views, and the Sanctuary of Madonna di Montenero, a hilltop church reachable by a steep climb. Local life centers on the piazza near the train station, where you'll find cafes and shops. Riomaggiore is less crowded than some other villages, making it a great base for exploring the region. The surrounding hills are terraced with vineyards that produce the local Sciacchetrà wine.
