The Alpine Botanical Garden Saussurea, named after the Swiss botanist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, is a unique garden perched at 2,173 meters (7,129 feet) near the Pavillon du Mont Fréty. It is one of the highest botanical gardens in Europe, dedicated to preserving and displaying the alpine flora of the Mont Blanc region. The garden features over 900 species of plants, including rare edelweiss, gentians, and saxifrages, all arranged in naturalistic rock gardens and meadows. Visitors can wander along winding paths with interpretive signs that explain the adaptations of these hardy plants to extreme conditions. The setting is spectacular, with panoramic views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks. The garden is a peaceful retreat, offering a chance to learn about the delicate alpine ecosystem while enjoying the crisp mountain air.
