Perched on a rocky spur above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Gratteri is a quintessential Sicilian hilltop village that feels frozen in time. As you wander its labyrinth of narrow, cobbled alleyways, you'll encounter ancient stone houses adorned with colorful flower pots, small piazzas, and sweeping vistas of the Madonie mountains and the coastline. The village is dominated by the ruins of a Norman castle and the Chiesa Madre, a 14th-century church with a striking rose window. What makes Gratteri distinctive is its authentic, unspoiled character, far less frequented than Cefalù, it offers a glimpse into traditional Sicilian mountain life. Visitors can explore the medieval quarter, enjoy local cuisine at a family-run trattoria, and hike the surrounding trails that connect to the Madonie Regional Natural Park. The panoramic terrace near the castle is a must for photographers, especially at sunset.
