The Abbey of Thelema is a modest stone villa located in the countryside just outside Cefalù, known for its brief but notorious association with the British occultist Aleister Crowley. In the 1920s, Crowley established a commune here, which he called the Abbey of Thelema, after the fictional abbey in François Rabelais' work. The villa itself is a simple two-story building with a rustic charm, surrounded by olive groves and dry stone walls. Today, the site is privately owned and not open to the public, but visitors can view the exterior from the road. The abbey's remote location and quiet surroundings contrast sharply with its controversial history, making it a point of curiosity for those interested in esoteric history. The interior once featured murals painted by Crowley and his followers, but these have since been painted over. Despite its faded notoriety, the abbey remains a pilgrimage site for some modern occultists.
