The Cyclopean Isles (Isole Ciclopi) are a small archipelago of seven basalt stacks rising from the sea just off the coast of Aci Trezza, a fishing village north of Catania. According to legend, these are the rocks that the Cyclops Polyphemus hurled at Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, giving the islands their mythical aura. Geologically, they are the remnants of an ancient volcanic eruption, eroded into jagged pinnacles and flat-topped platforms. The largest island, Isola Lachea, is a nature reserve accessible by boat, with a small beach and walking trails. Boat tours depart regularly from Aci Trezza’s harbor, circling the isles and stopping for swimming in the crystal-clear waters. The view from the mainland is equally stunning, especially at sunset when the rocks glow orange against the blue sea. The area is also popular for snorkeling, as the underwater volcanic formations teem with marine life. A visit here combines natural beauty with literary history, offering a tangible connection to one of the world’s oldest stories.
