The Amphitheatre of Catania, located in bustling Piazza Stesicoro, is a striking remnant of Roman engineering. Built in the 2nd century AD, it was one of the largest amphitheaters in the Roman Empire, capable of holding up to 15,000 people. Today, only a portion is visible, as much of it lies beneath later buildings. The exposed section reveals massive stone arches, corridors, and seating tiers, offering a glimpse into the scale of ancient gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. Unlike the Roman Theatre, this site is more of an open-air ruin integrated into the modern square, making it a unique urban archaeological feature. Visitors can view the remains from street level or descend into the excavated area to walk among the ancient stones, imagining the roar of the crowd.
