Sant'Angelo in Formis is a beautiful Benedictine abbey situated on the slopes of Monte Tifata, just outside Capua in the province of Caserta. Originally a pagan temple dedicated to Diana, it was transformed into a Christian basilica in the 6th century and later rebuilt by the Benedictines in the 11th century. The abbey is renowned for its extraordinary cycle of frescoes, which date from the 11th and 12th centuries and are among the best-preserved examples of medieval Italian art. The interior features vibrant scenes from the Old and New Testaments, including a striking depiction of Christ in Majesty. Visitors can also explore the peaceful cloister and the adjacent museum, which houses archaeological finds. The setting, with views of the surrounding countryside, adds to the spiritual atmosphere.
