Casertavecchia is the medieval heart of Caserta, perched on a hill about 10 km from the modern city. This charming village features narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, and a stunning Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. The cathedral, built in the 12th century, boasts a beautiful rose window and a tall bell tower. Visitors can wander through the village, enjoy panoramic views of the Campanian plains and the Gulf of Naples on clear days, and dine at local trattorias. The peaceful atmosphere offers a stark contrast to the grandeur of the Royal Palace.

Don't miss

  • Romanesque Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo with its rose window and crypt
  • The bell tower, offering panoramic views (climb the stairs)
  • Medieval streets and arches perfect for photography
  • The remains of the old castle (Castello) on the highest point
