The Christ of the Abyss (Cristo degli Abissi) is a striking bronze statue of Jesus Christ, placed on the seabed in the waters of San Fruttuoso Bay, about 17 meters (56 feet) deep. Created by sculptor Guido Galletti and installed in 1954, the statue stands with arms raised toward the surface, symbolizing protection for fishermen and divers. It has become a pilgrimage site for divers and a poignant underwater landmark. The statue is visible from above on calm, clear days, and snorkelers can catch a glimpse. For certified divers, the experience of swimming alongside the statue is unforgettable. The site is also part of the Portofino Marine Protected Area, rich in marine life. A replica of the statue stands on land near the abbey for those who cannot dive.
