The New Cathedral of Brescia, also known as the Duomo Nuovo, is a grand Baroque church that dominates Piazza Paolo VI. Built between 1604 and 1825, it features a towering dome that is one of the tallest in Italy, visible from across the city. Inside, visitors are greeted by a lavish interior with marble columns, frescoes, and altarpieces by local artists. The cathedral houses the revered 'Assumption of the Virgin' painting and a 16th-century wooden crucifix. The crypt contains remains of early Christian mosaics. It remains an active place of worship, so respectful attire is required. The adjacent Old Cathedral offers a striking contrast in style.

Don't miss

  • Climb the dome for panoramic views of Brescia (if open)
  • See the Assumption of the Virgin altarpiece by Pietro Marone
  • Explore the crypt with early Christian mosaic fragments
  • Admire the high altar and the wooden crucifix from the 1500s
  • Notice the contrast with the adjacent Romanesque Old Cathedral
