The Capitolium of Brixia is one of the best-preserved Roman temple complexes in northern Italy, located in the heart of Brescia. Dating from the 1st century AD, it originally consisted of three cellae (temple chambers) dedicated to the Capitoline Triad: Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. Today, visitors can walk among the towering columns and see the original mosaic floors and marble fragments. The adjacent museum displays statues, inscriptions, and everyday objects unearthed at the site, offering a vivid glimpse into Roman Brixia. What makes it distinctive is its integration into the modern city – it sits below street level, surrounded by medieval and Renaissance buildings, creating a striking historical layering. You'll see the temple podium, remnants of the portico, and a collection of Roman bronzes.

Don't miss

  • The three temple cellae with original marble flooring
  • The museum's collection of Roman bronze statues
  • The large inscription dedicating the temple to Vespasian
  • The underground area revealing earlier Roman structures
  • The adjacent Roman theater ruins (partially excavated)
