The Temple of Minerva stands as one of the best-preserved Roman buildings in Italy, located on Assisi's main square, Piazza del Comune. Its six Corinthian columns and pediment date back to the 1st century BC, originally dedicated to the goddess Minerva. In the 16th century, it was converted into the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, with a Baroque interior that contrasts with the classical facade. The temple's survival is remarkable: it was incorporated into later structures, which protected it from destruction. Today, visitors can admire the exterior from the piazza, then step inside to see the Baroque altar and frescoes. The temple is a testament to Assisi's layered history, where Roman, medieval, and Renaissance elements coexist. It's a quick stop but a must-see for history enthusiasts, offering a tangible link to the city's ancient past.
