Chiesa Nuova, also known as the Church of the New Convent, is a striking Baroque edifice in the heart of Assisi. It was constructed in the early 17th century over the house believed to be the birthplace of St. Francis. The church's name, meaning 'new church,' distinguishes it from the older San Francesco complex. Inside, the single nave is adorned with stucco work and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis. The most distinctive feature is the small room within the church that is venerated as the saint's actual birth chamber, accessible via a staircase. Visitors often comment on the serene atmosphere and the contrast between the ornate Baroque interior and the simple, humble origins of the saint. The church also houses a museum with relics and artifacts related to St. Francis.
