The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is a monumental complex comprising two churches, the lower and the upper, built into the hillside. As the mother church of the Franciscan Order, it draws pilgrims and art lovers alike. The lower basilica, with its low vaults and dim lighting, contains the saint's tomb and frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto. The upper basilica is flooded with light and features Giotto's celebrated cycle of 28 scenes from the life of St. Francis. The basilica's simple Romanesque exterior contrasts with its richly decorated interior, a testament to the Franciscan ideals of humility and devotion. Visitors can attend Mass, explore the crypt, and admire the intricate stained-glass windows. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains a place of deep spiritual significance.
