Ballymalis Castle is a striking 16th-century tower house located on the banks of the River Laune, just a few kilometers east of Killorglin. The castle is in remarkably good condition, with its tall, narrow structure rising above the surrounding farmland. Visitors can walk around the exterior and peer inside through the ground-floor windows, but the interior is not open to the public. The castle is a classic example of an Irish tower house, built by the local Gaelic chieftains. Its strategic position near the river once controlled a key crossing point. The site is free to visit and offers excellent photo opportunities, especially with the river and mountains in the background. A short walk along the riverbank provides a pleasant addition to the visit. Ballymalis is less known than other Kerry castles, so you may have it to yourself.
