Muckross Lake is the second-largest of the three Lakes of Killarney, lying at the heart of Killarney National Park. Its crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, including Mangerton and Torc, and are framed by ancient oak woodlands and rhododendron bushes. The lake is a haven for wildlife, with herons, otters, and a variety of waterfowl commonly seen. Several walking trails circle the lake, including the popular Muckross Lake Loop, which offers stunning views from the water's edge. The lake is also a starting point for boat trips to the nearby Meeting of the Waters and Ross Castle. Unlike the more touristy Lough Leane, Muckross Lake feels wilder and more tranquil, perfect for a peaceful hike or a picnic by the shore.

Don't miss

  • Walk the Muckross Lake Loop trail for panoramic lake and mountain views
  • Spot wildlife such as herons, otters, and deer along the shore
  • Enjoy a picnic at one of the scenic viewpoints
  • Take a boat trip from Muckross House to the Meeting of the Waters
  • Photograph the reflections of Torc Mountain in the calm water
