The Tholsel is a distinctive 18th-century building located at the junction of High Street and Rose Inn Street in Kilkenny. Built in 1761, it served as the city's market house and exchange, with an open arcaded ground floor where traders once sold goods. The building is crowned by a handsome clock tower, added in the 19th century, which has become a beloved city landmark. Today, the Tholsel houses the Kilkenny City Council offices and is not generally open to the public, but its exterior is a must-see for its elegant Georgian architecture. The clock tower chimes on the hour and is a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
