Clara Castle is a beautifully preserved 15th-century tower house located about 5 km south of Kilkenny city. This five-storey structure stands in a peaceful rural setting, offering visitors a chance to step back in time. The castle features a spiral stone staircase that leads to the top, where you are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding farmland and distant hills. Inside, you can explore the various rooms, including the great hall, kitchen, and bed chambers, with original fireplaces and narrow windows. The castle is largely unfurnished, allowing the architecture to speak for itself. A key feature is the 'murder hole' above the entrance, a defensive mechanism. Clara Castle is a great example of a Gaelic tower house, built by the local O'Carroll family. It is open to the public and offers a self-guided experience, with information panels providing historical context. The climb is steep but manageable, making it a rewarding stop for history buffs and those seeking a bit of adventure.
