Pollardstown Fen is one of the largest calcareous fens in Ireland, a unique wetland ecosystem fed by calcium-rich springs. Located just outside Newbridge, this nature reserve is a haven for wildlife, especially birds. A network of wooden boardwalks allows visitors to explore the fen without damaging the fragile habitat. The boardwalks wind through tall reeds and open water, offering close-up views of dragonflies, butterflies, and a variety of bird species such as swans, ducks, and warblers. The fen is also home to rare plants like the marsh helleborine orchid. Interpretive signs along the trail explain the ecology. It's a peaceful spot for a short walk, photography, or quiet contemplation. The reserve is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
