Varkala is a coastal town on the southwestern coast of India, renowned for its unique geography: a 15-meter-high laterite cliff that runs parallel to the Arabian Sea, creating a natural promenade. The cliff is lined with resorts, cafes, and shops, while Varkala Beach (also called Papanasam Beach) lies at its base, famous for its golden sand and supposedly sacred waters that wash away sins. Visitors can walk the cliff path, swim, sunbathe, or watch fishermen haul in their catch. The town also has a laid-back, bohemian vibe, attracting both pilgrims and international tourists.
Don't miss
- Walk the cliff-top path from North Cliff to South Cliff for panoramic ocean views
- Watch the sunset from a cliffside café with a fresh coconut or chai
- Visit the natural spring on Varkala Beach, believed to have healing properties
