The Janardanaswamy Temple is one of the most revered Hindu temples in Kerala, dedicated to Lord Vishnu (here called Janardana). Perched on the Varkala cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, the temple is believed to be over 2,000 years old, though the current structure dates from later renovations. Its architecture features a typical Kerala-style gopuram (gateway) and a copper-plated roof. Devotees come to offer prayers, especially during the annual festival in March-April. The temple also has a sacred tank (kalyani) and a nearby cave associated with the sage Narada. The serene atmosphere and sea breeze make it a spiritual highlight of Varkala.

Don't miss

  • Admire the intricate wood carvings and murals inside the temple sanctum
  • Witness the evening deeparadhana (lamp offering) ceremony
  • Explore the nearby cave of Narada, a short walk from the temple
