Nilkanth Mahadev Temple is a revered Hindu shrine perched on a hill at the confluence of the Pankaja and Neelganga rivers, about 32 kilometers from Rishikesh. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is believed to be where Shiva consumed the poison (halahala) during the churning of the ocean, turning his throat blue (Nilkanth). Visitors climb a steep path of around 500 steps or take a cable car to reach the temple, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and snow-capped peaks. The temple complex includes a main shrine with a Shiva lingam, a sacred pond, and smaller shrines, attracting pilgrims especially during the month of Shravan.

Don't miss

  • Ride the cable car (Manasa Ganga Ropeway) for aerial views of the hills and rivers.
  • Witness the evening aarti (prayer ceremony) with lamps and chanting.
  • Visit the sacred pond (Kund) where devotees bathe before entering the temple.
