Matangeshvara Temple is one of the largest and most important Shiva temples in Khajuraho, and uniquely among the western group monuments, it remains an active place of worship. The temple houses a towering stone lingam, one of the largest in the region, and a separate pavilion contains a large statue of Nandi, Shiva's bull mount. Unlike other temples that are archaeological sites, Matangeshvara buzzes with local devotees and ritual activity. Visitors can observe ongoing pujas, hear chanting, and experience the living spiritual tradition that has persisted for centuries. The temple's simple exterior contrasts with its powerful interior atmosphere.

Don't miss

  • Massive stone lingam, one of the largest in Khajuraho, still venerated daily
  • Separate Nandi pavilion with a large, finely carved bull statue
  • Active worship atmosphere with devotees, priests, and ritual offerings
