Kailasanathar Temple is the oldest surviving structure in Kanchipuram, built in the 8th century by the Pallava king Rajasimha. The temple is unique for its sandstone construction and a series of 58 small shrines lining the inner courtyard, each housing a lingam. The walls are adorned with exquisite carvings of deities and mythical creatures, as well as rare fragments of early Tamil frescoes. Visitors can walk around the main sanctum, which features a pyramidal vimana, and admire the intricate Pallava artistry that influenced later South Indian temple architecture.
