Virupaksha Temple is the focal point of Hampi's sacred center, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pampapathi. As you approach, the monumental 50-meter gopuram (gateway tower) dominates the skyline. Inside, the main shrine features a linga, and the pillared mandapa is alive with devotees and priests performing rituals. The temple complex includes a smaller shrine to the goddess Pampa and a bazaar street lined with monolithic pillars. The highlight is the elephant stable and the sacred tank, where water still reflects the gopuram. Unlike many ruins here, this temple remains an active place of worship, giving visitors a sense of living history.
