Reynisfjara is a stunning black sand beach near Vik, known for its dramatic basalt column formations that resemble a natural cave or organ pipes. The beach's jet-black sand contrasts with the white-capped waves of the Atlantic. Visitors must be cautious of 'sneaker waves', powerful, unpredictable swells that can sweep people out to sea. The beach offers a unique, otherworldly landscape, with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the water just offshore.
Don't miss
- Admire the hexagonal basalt columns at the eastern end of the beach, formed by cooling lava.
- Photograph the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, said to be trolls turned to stone by sunlight.
- Watch the powerful waves crash ashore, but stay well back from the waterline.
