Nea Kameni is a dark, volcanic island at the center of Santorini's caldera, formed by eruptions over the past few millennia. Accessible only by boat, it offers a unique opportunity to walk on a still-active volcano. A guided hike leads visitors across rugged lava fields to the summit crater, where sulfurous steam vents (fumaroles) hiss from the ground. The stark, lunar-like landscape contrasts vividly with the blue sea and whitewashed villages of Santorini. The experience is both educational and awe-inspiring, providing a tangible connection to the island's fiery origins.

Don't miss

  • Hiking to the crater rim and seeing active fumaroles up close
  • The contrasting colors of black lava, yellow sulfur, and blue sky
  • Panoramic views of the caldera and surrounding islands from the summit
