The ancient city-state of Sparta, famed for its military society, offers visitors a chance to walk among ruins that evoke its legendary past. The site includes the acropolis, where the remains of the Sanctuary of Athena Chalkioikos and a Byzantine church stand, and the well-preserved Roman theatre, which once seated thousands. While little remains of classical Spartan buildings, the setting, nestled near the modern town of Sparta and backed by the Taygetus mountains, conveys the city's historical significance. Visitors can also see the Leonidas monument and the nearby Tomb of Leonidas.
