The Monastery of Varlaam is the second largest of Meteora's active monasteries, perched atop a high rock pillar. Founded in the 14th century, it is named after the hermit Varlaam who first ascended the rock. Visitors climb a steep staircase carved into the cliff to reach the entrance, where they are rewarded with a beautifully preserved complex. The main church features exquisite post-Byzantine frescoes, and a small museum displays religious treasures. The monastery's balconies offer spectacular views of the other monasteries and the valley below.
