The Holy Monastery (Meteora), also known as the Monastery of the Transfiguration, is one of the earliest monastic settlements in the region, dating back to the 14th century. Today, it lies mostly in ruins, with only the main church and a few structures remaining. Despite its dilapidated state, the site offers a profound sense of history and spirituality. Visitors can explore the remnants of the katholikon (main church) with its faded frescoes and imagine the lives of the first hermits. The location provides a raw, unpolished glimpse into Meteora's monastic past, distinct from the more restored monasteries.
Don't miss
- See the ruins of the original katholikon with fragments of 14th-century frescoes.
- Walk among the stone foundations of monk cells and communal buildings.
- Contemplate the rugged beauty and historical significance of this early monastic site.
