The Monastery of Great Meteoron is the grandest and most historic of Meteora's monasteries, established around 1340 by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite. Perched atop the highest rock formation, it dominates the landscape. Visitors enter through a large tower and climb a staircase carved into the rock. Inside, the 16th-century katholikon features exquisite frescoes and a gilded iconostasis. The monastery also houses a museum displaying religious artifacts, manuscripts, and a small wine cellar. Its vast courtyard offers breathtaking views over the Thessalian plain.
