The Monastery of St. Nicholas of Mpantovas is a remarkable hermitage carved into a natural cave on a vertical cliff face, one of the most dramatic settings in Meteora. Founded in the 14th century, it was once a thriving monastic community but now stands largely abandoned, with only a few restored sections. Visitors can see the remnants of the cave church, with faded frescoes and a simple iconostasis, and imagine the ascetic life of the monks who lived there. The site offers a raw, atmospheric experience, with breathtaking views of the valley below.

Don't miss

  • See the cave church with its surviving 14th-century frescoes.
  • Marvel at the cliffside location and the monastery's integration into the rock.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Thessalian plain from the monastery's terrace.
