Palaiokastro, located about 20 kilometers southeast of Heraklion, is an archaeological site encompassing a Minoan settlement and a large cemetery. Excavations have uncovered house foundations, storage rooms, and pottery, providing insight into everyday Minoan life. The cemetery includes both pit graves and built tombs, with finds such as jewelry and weapons. The site is less crowded than major Minoan palaces, offering a peaceful exploration experience. Visitors can walk among the ruins and imagine the community that thrived here during the Bronze Age.
