The Historical Museum of Crete offers a comprehensive journey through the island's post-Minoan history, from the Byzantine and Venetian periods to the Ottoman era and modern times. Housed in a 19th-century neoclassical building, the museum features exhibits on Byzantine art, including rare icons and mosaics, as well as Venetian-era artifacts. Highlights include a reconstructed Cretan pharmacy, traditional folk costumes, and the study of writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The museum also covers the island's role in World War II and the resistance.
